During the performance a series of edible (and almost edible) artworks was created. Each cupcake explored the relationship between food, recession and socialscape as seen and experienced by individuals not society. Themes of abundance as well as scarcity, reborn and fertile recession grounds, social status, changing tastes, colour-overflows, social layers were examined in a cupcake form.

Cupcake itself was chosen as a starting point for recession conversation as a contained, pretty and well anchored in society’s mind form of both: abundance and scarcity. Cupcake has it all!

Bankside Urban Forest / creative consultations, 2011

Bankside Urban Forest is an imaginative name for an imaginative set of projects and actions bringing new life and uses to the outdoor spaces of Bankside. Bankside Urban Forest is about making Bankside a better place to live, work and visit. It is a strategy for enhancing public spaces - including streets, pavements, squares and parks - in the Bankside area. As part of Bankside Urban Forest, Southwark Council, Better Bankside and Design for London have commissioned architects Adams and Sutherland, and Peter Brett Associates to develop a vision for improving the public realm along Great Suffolk Street.

Better Bankside teamed up with Ania Bas to hold a unique creative consultation event along Great Suffolk Street on 18^th August. The event gave the design team the opportunity to gather views on their early proposals.The consultation focused around a central information ‘hub’ with a number of artists working along the street capturing peoples’ views on the proposals. The artists who took part and the results of their endeavors are shown in the links below.

Sitting on the longest bench you can find in the area, under the railway bridge… it is always nice sitting outside having your coffee, looking at the people. It can be funny seeing all of us – me who work here, the mobile coffee shop, cycling instructors and you… Just hiding from the rain in this tiny space… and people just passing fast…
Great Suffolk Street – it is one of the way to go to Tate Modern or the pub with great view by the river…

… If you are sitting longer you can even see Jude Law.. yeah, the actor… or someone just can ask you to write a story.. :)

Alternative Society, part of If Not, Then What?, March 2011

Alternative Society is an active search for and creation of new, radical, emergency, unconventional and revolutionary visions of the world. During a half day session a group of artists and researchers created portable visions of the society. Some of the bags created act as installations that have to be activated by the viewer, other bags simply store bigger ideas sitting within them.

The portable visions we delivered to society and shared with the wider public on 12th March - as part of If Not, Then What? project at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, UK

We are looking for people who enjoy making art and want to work with us on a consultation event as part of Bankside Urban Forest. On the 18^th August we will be engaging our neighbours in conversation about our ideas for improving Great Suffolk Street, Bankside, London SE1, and need your help to encourage people to articulate their ideas across a range of media platforms. Bankside Urban Forest is a partnership initiative to improve the public spaces of Bankside, its partners include Southwark Council, Better Bankside, Tate Modern and Design for London.

What: We would like you, for a maximum of 6 hours to be in charge of an arts activity that suits your interests (i.e. photography, drawing, storytelling, writing etc.) and engage with passers by, people who live and work locally, to try and capture their views on the project through a variety of media and artistic practices.

How: You will be contacted before the event with the activity proposal to discuss it in detail. You will be in charge of running the project on the day. You will work either solo or with another artist. Materials will be provided. Full briefing will be given before the event.

Your work will help inform the consultation process, and provide a valuable resource to the Project Design Team. Your work will be documented on the Bankside Urban Forest website.

When:18^th August 2011

Times: 6h slot between 12 noon and 8pm - to suit your availability.

Payment: Travel and lunch expenses up to a max of £15

Isles of Silly / Whitechapel Gallery Artist-In-Residence, 2009-2010

During academic year 2009/2010 I worked with Year 9 students from Stoke Newington School in London. We have been investigating the sites around the school grounds as well as personal spaces within it. This is how Isles of Silly came to life - the spaces of exchange, anger, rest, laughter and silliness.

The culmination of the project - a series of silly events during lunchtime took place in early July 2010 in the school grounds. The lunchtime events were aimed at students, staff and local community.

On 8th July 2010 the school opened it gates to the visitors - people could take part in performative tour of the school and visit Isles of Silly. Documentation of the entire week is available here. would you like to see more picture? Click here.

On Thursday 17th June 2010, - at Whitechapel Gallery took place a talk that explored Contested Spaces and artist's role in residency context.

Cafe Stories in Bedford - by Waitress in Residence Ania Bas and people of Bedford

During early summer 2010 I worked as waitress in residence at two of the towns centre's bustling cafes: La Piazza and Caffe Amore.

Between carrying cups of tea and cake, clearing and cleaning tables I was chatting with the cafes' customers. People told me many stories that became the source material for pages for a book.

Each donated story became the topic of discussion between myself and the artist and writer (and the editor of this book) Laura Trevail . The notes between Laura and myself also appear on each page, below each story, and together with the footnotes they elaborate on the stories and the editing process.

The stories in a disjointed form - each story on one page - have been presented back to people of Bedford on 24 and 25 July 2010 in Bedford Creative Arts HQ.

Ania continued the art of conversation in the gallery in Walsall by sharing stories with visitors and staff over tea and home-Ania-made cake. As part of her residency, she created unique gallery tours which bypass the exhibits and the architecture to highlight the long-standing memories which resonate throughout the building. The tours came to life during The Weekend Supplement event in December 2009.

Project commissioned by iNNoVaNDiS for Day of Entrepreneurs in San Sebastian

iNNoVaNDiS used again this method of working in April 2009. Results of DINÁMICA DE ANIA BAS (without Ania being present) can be seen here.

Ania Bas run workshop/dynamic about how our choices determine what we do, who we are and where we go. This project has been commissioned by iNNoVaNDiS as part of an entrepreneurial day organised by the University of Deusto on 18 November 2008 in San Sebastian, with the collaboration of iNNoVaNDIS and Gaze.

During 30min low tech sessions groups of students were able to live their potential future and see where their choices could potentially take them.

DIY 5 - Archive Y’self to Pieces, London

Ania participated in DIY 5- a profesional development project for artists to become obsessively self-referential archivists of their own practice and outputs. Project devised and led by Richard Layzell.

Ania, with Shakti (Laura Angelica Zapata Gomez) and Maggie Tran created a performance at Arnold Circus in London, using 3 chairs, 5 sheets of A4 paper, 3 pens and around 7 minutes. The performance was heavly documented by Annie Carpenter (pictures), Tim Jeeves (film), Martina von Holn (sound) and Mark Caffrey (text).

The work has been revisited a week later in Cafe Gallery Project space where Ania created an installation using the strongest in her opinion evidence of the piece: commentary by Martina von Holn and taking the piece outside the gallery space, by the gate. (The sound piece will be available on the website soon)

DIY 5 is a Live Art Development Agency initiative being developed in collaboration with Artsadmin, Colchester Arts Centre (East England), Fierce Earth (West Midlands), Nuffield Theatre & LANWest (North West), Arnolfini & Theatre Bristol (South West), and New Work Network.

This winter I had a kind of obsession for photographing an old pleasure-ground in my native town Kaunas. I never felt a need to take photos here during other seasons. So I wondered what made me come back to this place time and again.
Perhaps the quiet pleasure-ground covered in snow matched my nostalgia for the past days of childhood spent here. Maybe it was a soft longing for the past time, which was never consciously noticed before, but exposed itself in a concrete vision now.
It could also be the plans to remove the pleasure-ground from its long-time location and to build houses here. It could be a mere wish to preserve the feature of my town that is meaningful for me, although not so important for society in general.
Finally, the carousels looked unusual and attractive in winter time. Framed in a picture, they reminded me of an old French photography. Like some classical photo from the middle of the past century rendered in colors. A piece of romance known from famous photos found in my own town. I wonder if this photograph could mean something similar to so many people looking at it on-line, so many persons with their own stories, not connected to original contexts of the picture. - Tomas

The genesis of November banners: Karol (me) had taken some totally awesome photos and when Ania saw them she said 'I want you to work for me'. Karol (me) said 'It's gonna cost you!'. It seemed at first to be only a jungle, now it is a paradise. This is how much your perspective can change after eating a jar of homemade pickled artichokes while sitting on the roof on a warm evening. This is the way I like Venice now.

Where am I, July 2008 by Helen Heath:

My only son is one – and during the past twelve months I have lost myself. Not really sure how, when or even how serious it is, but I am not the same person anymore. Sometimes I miss being able to set up an easel and paint for days, weeks… Occasionally I yearn for days when I got carried away collecting bits for a project – spread them across a table to study them.

These days I’m lucky if I get to go to the toilet alone. I now have a very time and energy consuming project – which is on going. I have learnt that it is more fun to play along. So I am trying to get inspired (I just wish I could remember if I do!) In the meantime, Bertram and Rupert are the astronauts who live in my son’s pile of Mega Blocks – with mummy’s help they kindly build things for him to bash down… sometimes I wish he were less destructive.

"Highlighting dance, live music and film, the station will be pulsing with over 150 performers including professional dancers, first time performers and local groups of young and older people from Crewe and the wider region."

Performers Ania Bas, Rachel Jane Dean, Patricia Derrick, Hannah Pantin and Natasha Vicars, inspired by the classic film Brief Encounter (1945), gave a subtle performance on parting in the railway station's halls, corridors and lift.

During 3 days long residency Ania was looking for a job as an artist in non-art and art venues. She offered to work for a minimum hourly pay: £5,52 initially just for a week. She decided that whatever she would create during this time is going to belong to the employer. Ania only wants to keep the rights to the documentation of the whole process.

Ania Bas as a general affairs coordinator at BOB - the Bureau for the prOtection of the estaBlishment during two days of the Festival was protecting the Ujazdowski Castle. As the employee of the Bureau she was implementing a pilot project that was proposing an alternative to the signage such as: Silence! or Please Do Not Touch! usually present in historical buildings. All visitors to the centre were advised and instructed to wear a white, numbered and reusable sheet of A4 paper as a visual sign that will remind them to behave properly in this establishment.

Summer Arts Academy, Vilnius/ Kaunas/ Trakai, Lithuania

The 2008 Summer Arts Academy was a challenging creative 10-days program of exploration of the urban environment, engaging with people and using various media and artforms. The program of the Academy was build on the theoretical and practical platform of cultural animation. Summer Arts Academy took a form of a creative project lead by cultural animation practitioners & artists Ania Bas and Alicja Rogalska. The outcomes established during the Summer Arts Academy will be recorded and presented in the form of installation, intervention or a similar event in November 2008.

The working languages of the Academy were English, Russian, Belarusian and Lithuanian.

DISTRIBUTION / ACTION took place on 1st August 2008, 9 am, Rondo Giedroycia

Ania Bas continues her attempt to get to the bottom of what people are made of and for this project she concentrated on the inhabitants of Szczecin.
Ania during one day talked, measured, counted & observed people at Rondo Giedroycia in Szczecin. Collected material has been used to create a series of labels for cans with Paprykarz Szczeciński (local speciality) and other canned meat listing ingredients of inhabitants of Szczecin. The cans were distributed around Szczecin (Niebuszewo district) and some of them sent around Poland.

This project has been developed together with miejsce sztuki OFFicyna, Szczecin-based laboratory for art & social projects.

Ania was one of the 9 artists and arts groups involved in Disonancias project in 2007/2008 round. She undertook R&D project with Labein Tecnalia looking into: Sustainable urban environment model.
The project was rapidly growing and included various initiatives: improvement of work space (Ania was testing a table on the wheels), bringing in creative forces (Imagination Experts day - 19 children visited Labein), creative use of existing resources for communication (doodling during lunch break in the restaurant) and looking for new ways of communication (the second CUTRE FILM already released)

Look, Don't Look, Compton Verney, Warwickshire

Visitors to James Coleman exhibition at Compton Verney were invited to take part in the photographic project and become for 10 minutes a photographer or photographed subject. The project is inspired by Coleman's work and his ongoing exploration of the physical and psychological encounter between spectator and projected image.
Ania Bas and Graham Peet together with visitors in specially created studio environment were trying to catch time in between, preparation, getting ready to be captured. People taking part had to follow a set of rules such as: not taking nor looking at each other.

Imagination Experts Visit, 2008

Imagination Experts Visit (part of Disonancias), Bilbao, the Basque Country

As part of Disonancias project Ania together with Labein Tecnalia organised Imagination Experts visit to Labein. Nineteen children came to the company on 28th March 2008 to cause creative chaos, ask bold questions and bring in their creativity and imagination.

Labein researches from 6 departments organised experiments for children, some units also changed their environments and i.e. Nanotechnology Unit created Nanolandia as a way to give children a better insight into their research area.

It was truly collaborative day that involved majority of departments across the company and the outcomes of the day will inform ongoing research between Ania and Labein Tecnalia looking into: Sustainable Urban Environment Model. Creative exchange between children and adults, blurring the edges between work and home environments, cross-disciplinary work - all are part of the research.

Information about the event has appeared in the local newspapers: Gara and Deia as well as number of local TV stations.

Leftovers (2), 2008

14th March - 8th June 2008, St David's 2 Cardiff city centre development

7 doors were created as part of the project in Merthyr Tydfil (Artes Mundi outreach programme) and exhibited at St David's 2 Cardiff city centre development. Ania was working in Merthyr with the group of local artists at early stage of their carrier and together developed joint body of work - Leftovers (1) that looks into changes within cities. During project the group was investigating regeneration approach through series of performances and 2D work and exploring themes such as: connection with a place, leftovers of the atmosphere of the place after regeneration and the place of the human being within it.

The doors although firmly attached to the hoardings and set in place and time at the development side in Cardiff are creating an entrance to the future and raise the question about the past.

The doors were created together with Dan Roberts. This part of the project would not be possible without an enormous help from Island 2000 and Glyn Roberts.

Ania is one of the five artists showing new work as part of In The Space That Is Left exhibition in St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.

Independent labeling is a site specific project, and consists of series of labels exhibited around the venue. Ania labeled it all: a till, an elevator, a TV set, a head of Prince Charles, a half of the biscuit.

Made in Poland, inspired by BLUE project, Coventry & Cowes, UK

During one day collaboration in 2005 Ania and Inga Lukoseviciute, were exploring 'blueness' of their locations. Each of them spent a day in the city (Ania in Coventry, UK and Inga in Kaunas, Lithuania), photographing blue moments and writing down blue thoughts. Created material was gathered together in blue booklet. See BLUE project for more information.

'Made in Poland' has its roots in BLUE project but does not concentrate on blue moments. It is an attempt to define 'Ania Bas', her multiple moods, reactions, faces. Ania is trying to get to the bottom of what 'she' is 'made of' and how the location of where she was 'made in' informs 'her'. Ania employs maths and linguistic play to find out.

This project was developed with Laundry as part of the group residency at Galleri54 in Göteborg, Sweden - programme called ‘Weekends at Galleri54'.

Work created during Conceptual Art Week-long Workshop at The Junction in Cambridge.
Xerox Fuck (performance and installation) was created together with Adam James.

The work has been exhibited at Red Wire Gallery in Liverpool as part of Red Wire Open 2007.

Daily Post Liverpool: One of the stand-out works is 'Xerox F--k' by Ania Bas and Adam James. This piece is a collage of overlapping photocopied body parts, with more images projected over it in green. The featured bodies appear almost trapped under water or in plastic. With squeezed-shut eyes, squashed flesh and string-like hair, their features are reduced to basic shapes and tones. An original and unusual form of bodily representation.

The work has been showed in Greece in July 2008 - Visual Routes Video & New Media Art, part of Olympolis Project 2008. (Part of 37th Olympus Festival.)

Visitors to the Shadow exhibition at Compton Verney on 11th and 12th August 2007 were able to create digital silhouettes of themselves. These were then turned into real card silhouettes on a digital cutting plotter in a 21st century recreation of a popular 19th century activity.

Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, The Sun - all tabloids have been writing about them, them = Poles. Ania and Alicja Rogalska are both Polish and decided to have a closer look into how their nation has been presented by tabloids. The quotes from the press have been transferred onto prints and badges to shout out the tabloids' truth even louder. Although gathered text is Polish nation specific the work reflects on more general issue: being foreign in UK - ranging from: being watched, accused of, scared of to being needed, relied on, loved. The daily press keeps writing about Poles, Ania and Alicja’s collection of quotes grows every day...

Poles Simply Work Harder was presented as part of Heroes& Zeros, Twins&Nuns event organised by Laundry in March 2007.

Part of the PSWH collection was exhibited in Havant Arts Centre as part of READ ME exhibition in May 2008.

A day in a Role - residency with Vestas Blades, the Isle of Wight

As part of the placement, Ania decided for one day do the work of somebody else. She was a cleaner, a shop floor worker, a secretary, a chef, a manager, a security lady - she did 13 different jobs in total. 13 day long performances. At the end she offered a residency for Vestas employees - to be an artist for a day and do her 'job'. Two people applied and one got the residency. Penny (the new resident artist) organised lunch long 'tag a friend' project.

The project has been developed by Arts Council England in partnership with Arts and Business South East, as part of the Interact scheme, which offers artists the opportunity to develop their practice in an innovative industry context.

Menu Cards - residency with Vestas Blades, the Isle of Wight

Between February and August 2007 Ania was undertaking R&D placement with Vestas Blades UK Ltd on the Isle of Wight. Vestas Blades develops and produces wind turbine blades, and has an award winning approach to reducing environmental impact during manufacture. Ania was working across the company developing new work and looking into communication, change and ideas of community and shared social activity.

Menu cards were produced weekly during Ania's placement and displayed in plastic menu cardholders in the restaurant at Vestas Blades.

Framedalism, 2007

13 frames were located in and around Five Ways Shopping Centre.
Each one was framing a story that might have happened.
Commemorate a place of potential or real vandalism of places and people.

Frames lived double life: left unprotected in public spaces, easy to be abused. At the same time their photographed and printed out versions were exhibited in the shop window and enjoyed the status of being not touchable.

This project was developed as part of Morning After programme lead by Creative Alliance and run by Friction Arts in Curio City Shop. Framedalism was part of the group show.
